Quick Info

Ever seen one of those computer cases with the LCD status reports and wished you were as well-informed? Or maybe you were just suffering from gadget-envy.

Well, nMediaPC makes this handy OEM-grade display that lets you be informed of your computer status just like those much more expensive computer cases. ("OEM? What does that mean to me?" It means you have to buy a little mounting rack and download the drivers from their website when you install it.) It fits handily into a five and a quarter inch drive bay and hooks up to a USB port. What will it display? More than I have room to talk about, but it can tell you about CPU usage, temperature, fan speeds, what music track your CD is playing . . . check out their website for more.

Whether it's something you need, or just a handy item you could use, decide for yourself if this is the one for you. We'll still be waiting when you're done.

5 out of 5 eggs Rikku's LCD review

Pros: excellent LCD with the blue text this fits with the NmediaPC cases excellently it matches the color of the power button LED I have owned the 5.25 version of this for another computer of mine and like it

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: excellent LCD once it has gone to blue text instead of the original green colored text

4 out of 5 eggs The Display is not bad

Pros: The display is working properly with no problems.

Cons: I removed an egg because the display emits a lot of light. It would be nice if the backlight could be lowered or turned off.

1 out of 5 eggs BSOD

Pros: Would look great if it worked. The default message appears on the panel.

Cons: While easy to physically hook up, it causes my computer to get stop errors and boot cycle as soon as I install the driver. (Win7 64 Bit). When the driver is not installed, the panel lights up and just has the default logo screen on.

Other Thoughts: $38 down the toilet. I haven't given up on troubleshooting, but even if I can get it working, it still has earned a poor rating because I've done everything step by step, and using drivers direct from their website. The instructions and website are somewhat legible.

1 out of 5 eggs Old Software

Pros: Fit nice and looks good, but that's about it.

Cons: The software has not been updated since 2007, it crashes by Window7x64 system. I had to uninstall the device in the Device Manager so now it just sit in the bay and just also displays the power on screen.

Other Thoughts: If it doesn't crash your system, it's a nice product for the money. The old software allow you to do some cool things but in my case I would get the Blue Screen of Death one a week or so. Since uninstalling over a year age my system has not crash since!

3 out of 5 eggs Adds panache to your case, but buggy software

Pros: Works well. Backlit blue so it matches the LED ring around the power button on my nMEDIAPC case.

Cons: The display software leaves much to be desired. It has refresh issues, constantly blanking the LCD noticeably for a few seconds.

Additionally, and more importantly, sometimes the software completely fails to send the appropriate information from Windows Media Player and the file name and length are simply blank. This can be resolved by unchecking and rechecking the plugin for WMP for the LCD software in WMP, but it took forever to figure that out, and there is no help to be found anywhere on nMEDIAPCs site for the issue.

Bottom line, expect limited support on the software.

Other Thoughts: Worth it if you want an LCD to display typical HTPC info, but can be skipped.

Honestly, should simply come with every nMEDIAPC case IMO. Let's face it, regardless of the retail price here, the cost to make a tiny little monochromatic LCD like this is minimal, so including it with the cases would be worthwhile.

4 out of 5 eggs A nice touch to a HTPC

Pros: The blue lighting is very nice. LCD screen is negative on the back numerical digits etc are lighter which makes it stand out more/makes it easier to read.

Cons: Should come with driver disk and should be more user programmable. I've seen some customizable options but selecting one of the displays like digital time does not allow me to change it to how I want it. It's using military 24hour time and the date is day/month which living in the US is very odd and can be easily deceptive.

2 out of 5 eggs not the best lcd

Pros: It's BRIGHT! It does actually work once you figure it out. The nmediapc case that I bought it to go into looks and works great.

Cons: It's too BRIGHT! It is not a very clear reading lcd; it's blurry and you can only read it up close and straight on. The installation information for setting it up isn't very clear; I had to read a lot of tech chat to get it working. I would never go through that again; I would burn it first. When that baby comes out of my pc I am going to smash it with a sledge, then... burn it.

Other Thoughts: There are a few other lcd's available. I would look around and try to find another to fit in the case or just plain leave it out.

5 out of 5 eggs Just what the case needed

Pros: Let's face it, not many HTPC cases have displays or options for a display. This LCD is designed just foer the NMEDIA cases and works Great. It give the case a HTPC look as it's lit up and showing information about whats goign on with teh computer. The information is pretty basic but that's okay. It's better then nothing at all. The case already sounds and looks like a old desk top anyway. An ATX case is a atx case even on it's side.

Cons: Not a con, but it would be neat to be able to change the displat color and program what you want it to read.

2 out of 5 eggs LCD disappointing

Pros: It works and does display various items about the computer.

Cons: Display is completely washed out if looking at it from an angle. You can only read it head on. Some items of the software depends on other software running like speed fan.

Other Thoughts: I ended up removing this from my HTCP case because it just looked like a blue blob in my entertainment system. I would not recommend this LCD especially at the price.
