1 out of 5 eggs Unit Failed twice under a 12 hour period

Pros: All the product features listed in RV042G item description were "pros" I was looking forward to

Cons: Unit failed twice within a 12 hour period, causing significant down time for our company.

Other Thoughts: After the first failure, I gave the unit the benefit of the doubt after being lulled into sense of security by the Cisco branding. The 2nd failure shook me out of the marketing trance Cisco had placed me under. Never again, Cisco.....Never again.

5 out of 5 eggs Cisco RV042G

Pros: Crazy fast. I had a dying Linksys (which served me very well; it was simply getting old) which was giving me 0.5-4 Mbps throughput. With the new Cisco router I am getting 26-64 Mbps, depending upon the time of day (I have Comcast cable access). Setup was very easy. The interface is easy to navigate.

Cons: None so far. Does everything I need, and it's FAST.

1 out of 5 eggs DON'T BUY IT - My Opinion

Pros: Dual WAN, DHCP, Gigabit all around, feature rich GUI

Cons: The GUI locks out after a few minutes after being loged in.
After enabling, then disabling the emails of logs, they kept coming. Had a 2 lock ups that required a reboot of the router - unacceptable!!!

Other Thoughts: I am a very unbiased user, I bout this product because it was in the small business class level and had dual WAN for my dual ISP, plus it was a DHCP router - perfect package. But after filing out ticket after ticket with tech support who where responding with "Do you have the latest firmware" which I did out of the box.

If it would have worked, I would have been a happy camper.

Will be returning.

Now setting up a server with pfSense to act as my corporate grade Router/Firewall/VPN/DHCP/ect... - Best option I made so far!!!

1 out of 5 eggs I would not recommend

Pros: works for 3-4 months

Cons: see above for the cons. I have purchased two of these units. Both ver 3. The first one had a problem and it was too late to return to Newegg. So I did not have time to fool with it, everyone needed their connection, I purchased a second one. Now that one after 4 months is losing the internet connection.
Today I went back to the old one to upgrade the firmware and it blew up. It was reporting an Ip address, but it would not open up. Now its on to tech support. After reading everyone's notes, I don't hold out much hope.

1 out of 5 eggs CISCO DOES NOT SUPPORT THIS ROUTER

Pros: compact

Cons: not rack mountable, interface is completely backwards and disorganized to the point where dr-u-gs were involved when designing it. CISCO has not supported this router at all. There are major flaws in the firmware that have not been fixed yet theyve known about them for years including the same problem in the lower RV042 unit. The 042G is NOT voip compatible with dual WAN which is the epic fail of this unit. why bother?

Stay away from it as you will have nothing but frustration setting it up.

Other Thoughts: If you can find the rare 4.0.4 firmware for the RV042 unit, go with that instead. Otherwise don't buy cisco until they fix this.

ZyXel is working on theirs and listens to their customers. I hope Cisco reads this.

1 out of 5 eggs AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!

Pros: Nothing if it doesnt work!

Cons: not rack mountable. NOT VOIP COMPATIBLE. Cisco intentionally revised the firmware and completely FUBARed the way it handled SIP traffic and registration.

Geniuses at work over in San Fran.
And the technicians have minimal idea of what the system even does. Even though the speak english and are very nice on the phone, they're level 2 techs at best.

2 out of 5 eggs Not ready for prime time

Pros: -As a router, it works very well as long as you don't need to reliably get into the web interface
-solid metal construction
-nice feature set (dual WAN, VPN, DMZ port) for the price

Cons: -web GUI kept locking up on me after <24hrs uptime (after inputting username/password it would just sit there trying to log in but never actually logging in). Router would continue working, but the only way to get back into the GUI was to power cycle the device.
-email logs would not send out automatically. I set to email every 10 minutes or 50 lines, and it would never send out. But when I hit the "Email Log Now" button, it would immediately send the log to the email address I put in. This tells me I set the email server and address up properly, but the router is having trouble sending the logs out on its own.

Other Thoughts: -I have an older RV042 v2 and it works great, none of the problems listed above. I purchased the RV042G to relegate the RV042 to backup router, but because of the reliability issues under Cons, I moved the RV042 back to main router. I'll wait a couple of firmware revisions and try the RV042G again. For now, I am RMAing the device for refund.
-This was the 2nd router I tried. I RMA'd the first one because it locked up during initial setup so badly that power cycles and even the reset switch weren't bringing the router back up. My 2 egg rating is based on the 2nd router, not the first.
-I love my old RV042 v2, was hoping for more of the same with this one, but it's a brand new hardware revision, so you may be better off waiting for new hardware or firmware updates before trying this one.

5 out of 5 eggs Happy RV042g User

Pros: Solid Router

Cons: None so far (about 3 months).

Other Thoughts: I was just shopping for a second one of these new RV042g. I didn't buy the first one here, but i've been a newegg shopper for many years and am very thankful for the knowledge i get from the reviews. I think the review by bwong is way off, so i feel i need to add some truth to this product.

The VPNs seem fine. I have 7 configured and they are solid. I'm running IP Phones and Data shares through them. I have at least a dozen port forwards that are working flawlessly. I've used RV042 (about 12 of them) for about 6 years. They have done me well. I have had some fail (RV042 (not the G version)) after about 3 years but for the price and features it's a great deal. I'm hoping the RV042g has a better lifespan. I'm not sure what happened with bwong but i'm purchasing a second one now.

2 out of 5 eggs OK for simple network

Pros: - Fast, very easy (almost turn key) setup for basic network.
- Setup PPTP VPN is very easy. But who still use PPTP?
- Ipsec VPN is fast (when it works).

Cons: Documentation is weak. Most layman wont know how to setup half of the stuffs.

Poor VPN support,. Setting up IPSec VPN is a nightmare, even if you are using Cisco's Quick VPN client. The router will drop the VPN connections or randomly refuse the connection completely for no good reason. Cisco support is not helpful either. Just keep on blaming Windows firewall even it is completely disabled.

I must admit that the router VPN speed is very good in some rare occasions when I mange to established the connection.

Port forwarding for some basic TCP ports are almost impossible. I need to physically move one of my web server to use the DMZ port, burn an static IP, and setup new DNS entry all because the router refuse to forward HTTP and HTTPS ports.

Other Thoughts: 1. Should have just buy a cheaper router and flash it with WRT.
2. Next time will try all the advance function first b4 the return period is up.
