The Deskstar 7K1000.D is Hitachi's first one-disk, 500GB, 7200 RPM 3.5-inch hard drive for use in power-friendly consumer and commercial desktop computers. This fourth-generation 1TB hard drive from Hitachi uses Advanced Format, which increases the sector size on HDDs from 512 bytes to 4096 (4K) bytes, thereby increasing capacities and improving error correcting capabilities. Consult the Hitachi Advanced Format Technology Brief for more information on these drives. Leveraging eighth-generation power management technology, as well as power-saving HiVERT innovations pioneered on the popular 2.5-inch line of notebook hard drives from Hitachi, this new desktop drive provides up to 16% idle power savings over the previous model, delivering best-in-class power management and thermal emissions.

2 out of 5 eggs Good while it lasted...

Pros: Fast and cheap

Cons: Died after 18 months. Started the click of death.

Bottom Line: There were quite a few bad reviews about this drive and I thought I would give it a try. It was very fast and good while it lasted, however I need something more reliable than that.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Took me about 5 mos. to figure out what my computer problem was, starting two weeks after building my computer. I was getting very frequent "Video Hardware Error" and "Graphics Driver Failed" errors while playing games and Flash failures when watching youtube. Started replacing compy parts when it was in my budget since drivers, new fans, and OS reinstalls didn't help; this had been causing it. Put a new HDD in and tried to use this as a backup or something, but now it is completely dead. Upset I lost $70 on this.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great Drive buy it on sale and you'll not regret.

Cons: none

Bottom Line: My opinion is that 500GB(465GB usable) drives are better than larger storage drives like 2 / 3 TB HDDs if the RPM say here 7200rpm you essentially would just have more space to seek through taking more time to find what you're needing and after the drive has been used for a while it will take longer to find places to write and so forth but depending on usage the larger drives have their place. I'm a don't keep all the eggs in one basket approach to storage myself.

5 out of 5 eggs Good size, and price

Pros: Not sure what to say. It's an HDD. It's only been corrupted by RAM. I though the hard drive had gone bad, but after extensive testing in other computers, the RAM was the problem. This HD is almost a year old, and running strong. I have moved it to my linux in exchange for a much faster SSD.

Cons: No cons for this product per se. However, I would not reccomend buying an HDD. I have had an SSD in this build to replace the HDD and I would hands down recommend and computer aficionado to purchase an SSD instead of an HDD. These are only good for storage. Also, it is compatible with Sata-USB 3.0 converters, so you can use this as external if you wish.

Bottom Line: If you are dead set on buying an HDD I would reccomend this product, but if you are just looking to build a computer, DO NOT BUY THIS. you want to buy an SSD, not an HDD. HDD is a thing of the past. SSD's are uncomprehendingly faster. If you play offline games with an SSD and enough ram, you may never see load times again.

Pros: Really, really effective at keeping papers from blowing around my desk.

Made a satisfying sound when I chucked it into the trash.

Cons: Not so good at storing data, since it doesn't work at all.

5 out of 5 eggs Great drive

Pros: Fast, quiet, and reliable.

Cons: not ssd

Bottom Line: I've used the drive for 4 months without any problems. I replaced a Samsung drive with this Hitachi and it's much faster. I'm going to buy another drive.
