Customer Reviews of the Acer America TMP633-M-6639
Pros: 1. Win 7 Pro 2. 9+ hr battery life 3. Comfortable, human-size keyboard 4. Sturdy build 5. Good WiFi reception 6. HDMI and USB 3 7. Light(ish) weight 8. Long wall wart cord
Cons: 1. No optical drive (CD/DVD) 2. So-so screen 3. Battery design makes for awkward storage in a sleeve
Bottom Line: Installing 4GB RAM was E-Z--remove tiny phillips head access screws, open compartment, snap in RAM card, close compartment--badda-bing! As good as 4GB RAM was, 8GB makes this puppy smooth and quick, especially with multiple tabs open, WiFi, word processing, etc.
In summary, and paraphrasing Pontius Pilate, I can't find much fault with this laptop.
1) The keyboard is designed for average-sized human hands and the key feel and rebound are good for all day typing; key arrangement is good.
2) WiFi reception is above average and the WiFi machinery doesn't mess with my router the way the Lenovo ThinkPad E/Atheros combo did.
3) Windows 7 Pro is still the most stable OS I've ever used and, in my experience, even better than Apple.
4) The 9+ hour battery life is impressive.
5) The construction is sturdy.
6) Just about every conceivable connection, including HDMI and USB 3.
7) Light enough to carry without strain, and the battery design provides for a grip at the end of the forearm supporting the laptop.
8) The screen is good for front-and-center viewing, but has a narrow range of view, is matte finished, and not really designed for watching flicks or gaming.
9) You'll need an external CD/DVD dealy-o if you want the use of an optical drive.
Pros: TravelMate is considered the standard business laptop from Acer. It's an upgrade from the consumer Aspire line because it includes features like built-in support for the Acer ProDock (LC.DCK0A.005) and Disk Anti-Shock (DAS) protection. It also comes with a 2 year standard warranty (versus 1 year).
As a business grade laptop it includes all the features you'd expect from a business laptop such as TPM, DAS drive protection, docking support, Intel Management, Intel Anti-Theft, vPro (not on this model CPU) and Acer ProShield Security.
This unit ships with Windows 7, but has the sticker and can take a free upgrade to Windows 8.x if you're so inclined. It has several USB 3.0 ports and one eSATA / USB 2.0 combo port, which is refreshing to find on a laptop. The WiFi card is dual-band and a physical WiFi switch is on the front edge for 'airplane mode'. The unit comes with an extended battery which provides 12 hours of normal operation.
The fan is almost silent and I don't find the laptop to be excessively hot during normal use. Certainly no warmer than other small business laptops in this class.
Cons: Upgrading to Windows 8.x requires a BIOS flash to the newest Acer BIOS (available free). Not a big deal, but worthy of note.
It does not include an optical drive (DVD, Blu-Ray, etc.), but that was known ahead of time. Again, just worthy of notation. No big deal.
Bottom Line: I bought this to replace my old Acer Timeline 3810 which was starting to show her age a bit. She's 4 years old this month (01/2014).
Despite what the detailed spec's say per Crucial this unit will hold 16 GB of DDR3 RAM. I installed that as my first upgrade and it makes quite a noticeable difference in the system's performance. But not nearly as much as the Seagate 500GB SSHD hybrid drive I installed. This system uses the Intel HM77 chipset so the SATA subsystem totally takes advantage of the 6Gbps SATA3 & SSHD hybrid drive's massive onboard cache, and boot times reflect that immediately. Although the spec's say 12 hours of battery operation I'm seeing closer to 15 - 17 hours in my day-to-day job functions.
Prior to purchase I had read other reviews that said the keyboard is "spongy and soft" and loud. This is not my experience at all. This keyboard is much better than the chiclet keyboard on my 3810T. The touchpad is larger than my 3810T's with dedicated mouse keys and a center fingerprint reader for those so inclined. I also read that the screen was dim, and this too is not the case. I actually had to turn the brightness down as it was too bright for my tastes.
All in all this is a great laptop for anyone looking for a business laptop for their small or mid-sized business (SMB).
