3 out of 5 eggs Quality case, but be careful on Mobo selection

Pros: Good finish, seemingly good quality case. I like the 1U form factor since I have some 19" rack mounts on my work desk.

Cons: -Lack of documentation with case, but not a big deal if you have built a system before.

-My biggest issue is that I bought a mini ITX board, knowing this is a Mini ITX case (as stated in Athena's own specs for this case), and the motherboard was too tall due to the sound outlets. I used an MSI H81I ITX motherboard. Just like the other reviewer who ran into this problem with the sound outlets being too tall, I desoldered them since I didn't need sound on this build, and after that I was mostly good to go, except the cover for the rear plugs (to keep dust out of the mobo) was also too tall for this case. I'm not sure whether to blame the case or the motherboard, but I assume that a mini-ITX board should always fit in a mini ITX case properly.

Bottom Line: I would recommend this case only if you contact Athena prior to purchasing and verify your motherboard will fit. Otherwise I would beware. I'm still happy with it, but I feel I had to hack it together and that wasn't the plan.

Dear customer, thank you for your reviews on Athena Power RM-1U100DR22. We apologize about the chassis fitting issue happened to you. We strongly encourage that user who has the similar issue, please contact our Customer Service and Tech Support team via landline (626)810-5008 or email service@athenapower.us during our regular business hours (8:30am-5:30pm, MON-FRI). Furthermore, according to a standard 19-in rack mount chassis specifications, the chassis outline height of a standard 1U chassis is 1.75 inch (44.45mm). This height is already including the thickness of material of chassis. Athena Power RM-1U100DR22 chassis material is T=1.2mm SECC, so the chassis inner height is around 42.05mm. User also need to notice the M/B standoffs height; it's around 4mm high.

4 out of 5 eggs Sufficient Quality for General Purpose use.

Pros: I used this case along with an ASROCK QC-5000ITX Motherboard (AMD FT3 Kabini CPU), an ADATA internal SSD and 2GB Kingston RAM to make a great little Intranet server. I think it would be a good choice for a commodity hardware project, such as small server farms (up to a few thousand dollars' worth). Obviously, if you want to invest millions you'd want to do a little additional study first on things like power consumption and cooling issues ;-)

Cons: Being 1U, it's pretty darn small to fit stuff into. But the stuff I used worked out really well.

    4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This is a pretty good deal on a small 1U chassis and a high quality PSU. I bought one seven months ago, and second one a week ago.

Cons: The first system I build had problems with the back I/O area. The audio jacks were too tall to fit into the space, and the I/O shield was way too tall. I ended up cutting out the metal support bar above the I/O area and that allowed me to fit the audio jacks through the hole. Not having the I/O shield wasn't a big deal for me.

The second system I built had problems with the power button. One of the wires that connected to the button had fallen off at one point. I was able to solder it back to the button, but you'd think something like that wouldn't happen. I couldn't get the I/O shield to fit with the second system, but the audio jacks fit through without any modifications.

It doesn't come with a manual so I'm still not sure what the correct way to install hard drives is.

Bottom Line: Overall I'd recommend it. It's not perfect, but I haven't seen a perfect 1U chassis before. For the money I think this is the best one out there.

2 out of 5 eggs Sturdy case ruined by poor quality control

Pros: It's small, it's relatively cheap, the metal at least sturdy.

Cons: The front panel wires are awful. The HDD LED connection is three pins wide and the power LED is two. This is supposed to be the other way around. Or like many manufacturers make the power LED two individual leads. So I either cut and splice the connections on the proper wires or I use the power LED as my HDD LED and vice versa. That wouldn't be so bad if the lights weren't labeled on the front. This is VERY sloppy quality control.

Bottom Line: I went into this knowing that as a 1U case I was going to have to make some slight modifications to make it work. I used a dremel to cut and grind the I/O shield for my motherboard down to a size that would fit the 1U case. It worked for the most part, but the standoffs on this case are shorter than normal so it sits 2-3mm lower than the I/O shield expects. That's no problem for most of the jacks as they have some wiggle room but I had to grind down the hole for the server ID button as it was pushed up against the I/O shield causing it to be stuck down.

1 out of 5 eggs Awful - Lowest Quality - 5.25 Bay Nonstandard Size - Power Switches Broken After Two Months

Pros: Size is right. Has 5.25 Bay. Includes PSU.

Dear Customer. Thank you for your review of Athena Power RM-1U100DR22. This rack mount chassis is deigned and built as an IPC grade chassis. The 5.25" external bay is designed by the standard form factor of 5.25" drive bay which dimension is W 5.75" x H 3.25" x D 8". Furthermore, Athena Power RM-1U100DR22 has 1 year limited warranty, so within 1 year purchasing user can do RMA with us for part replacement. We encourage any user has the issue with fitment or needs the RMA service, please feel free to contact our Customer Service at 626-810-5008 or email us at service@athenapower.us during our regular business hours 8:30am~5:30pm Mon.~Fri.

3 out of 5 eggs Good case with cooling options, however...

Pros: Compact size with great, simple layout perfect for network firewall appliance.

Cons: The 5.25 opening is designed odd with rounded corners, i had purchased a 5.25 to 3.5 bay converter and it would not fit flush so it has to be recessed which makes it look odd. Not sure if this would be the same for something like a standard dvd/cd-rom drive or not, but something to consider if your wanting the device installed to be flush.

The biggest con - Athena Power will not custom cut any 1U IO shields for motherboards. Instead they offer some universal IO shield that you have to cut yourself. This is a deal breaker for me because I was planning on building many appliances with a 1u chassis for my customers and I have no time to mess around with that. Other vendors I have used have no issue cutting me an IO shield for their 1U chassis specifically for the motherboard I was using. I will have to look elsewhere for an IO shield or find another vendor for my chassis.

Bottom Line: This would actually be a great option for any small network appliance like a firewall if Athena took the time to actually provide custom IO shields for their chassis. If you cant adequately install the components in the chassis then its essentially useless and in my opinion some junk universal IO shield just doesn't cut it.

not much to say other then makes a great little 1U server. Did need to make one minor modification to the back where mainboard went in, but think that was more the mainboard vendor not using known standards.

Cons: included front fans are noisy! bought some quieter 40 MM fans.

4 out of 5 eggs Cable management Nightmare

Pros: I am using this as a NAS that sits above my server in my rack, it is well-constructed and quiet for what it is.

Cons: Ribbon Cable Riser Card missing from the unboxing and best fits a thin mini ITX boards, my MSI AM1I mini ITX board would not fit due to the sound ports and CPU fan where to tall. I desoldered the audio ports and rigged and different cooling solution for the CPU. The ribbon cable riser card that was missing was not a big deal because my using a 5.25 inch hot swap drive bay in its space. The mounting brackets needed to install the 5.25 inch drive properly are missing as well or sold separately not sure due to they are not listed in the specifications.

Bottom Line: One egg loss for poor description in the specifications and missing parts in the unboxing, I plan on keeping this chassis because it fits my needs with some heavy modification. Buyers beware.

    Manufacturer Responses:

Thank you for your reviews. We apologize about your inconvenience. Athena Power RM-1U100DR22 is a compact mini-ITX rack mount server chassis designed to install 1 internal 2.5 HDD and an add-in card, so no space to install a 5.25 device and an add-in card. If users want to install 1 external 5.25 device only, we suggest Athena Power RM-1U100D22. However, we can help users who is having same issue on RM-1U100DR22. Please feel free to contact us at (626) 898-2898 or email us at service@athenapower.us. Monday through Friday, 8:30AM to 5:30PM. Thank you again.
