2 out of 5 eggs Updated 4/5/16: Great Basic NAS Unit Until It Died

    Pros: Easy To Setup
    Quiet
    Cheap
    Good Documentation
    Straight-forward GUI and Setup Disk

Cons: Minor Con: Security Required For Shares
Minor Con: It's Stark White (but I threw it under a desk so who cares)

Bottom Line: Let me start by saying I picked this unit up for the sole purpose of being a backup target for my media server. I am not using any of the other functionality.

With that said, I put in 2 Western Digital 3TB Green drives, dropped it on my network, and ran the start up disk. The start up disk took no more than 5 minutes to complete, and the formatting of the two drives in RAID 1 took all of 5 minutes.

I mapped the volume it created to my server - it does require security, but honestly - I just set a user and ticked the "save creds" on my Windows server when I mapped the drive. Not really a big deal.

If you want a NAS that is easy to setup, no frills, and works - this is definitely the box for you. If you're looking to run all sorts of apps on it, you may want to look towards a Buff or a Synology.

It does have an iTunes, DDNS, FTP, and Backup features with it - but I cannot personally comment on them. I am very happy with this unit.

    Update:

Unfortunately, 3 months out of warranty, my unit has died. It won't spin up and hard drives (I've tried 5) and the power button just blinks repeatedly. The thing was flawless for two years and 3 months until it decided to die. All the drives in it were fine, but the data was obviously lost. Lucky for me it was a backup target only.

I get in this day and age things are much more disposable than they used to be, but something like this I would expect to last a bit longer.

4 out of 5 eggs Pretty good, not great

Pros: Consistent, near flawless behavior for nearly 20 months. Compared to the Buffalo equivalent, this alone is fantastic. Relatively easy setup. Nice sleep feature goes offline each night; prolongs drive life. Basic NAS. Good customer service when it died. No arguments from manufacturer about replacing. 4 eggs for service, otherwise 3.

Cons: Died after 20 months. That said, it's twice the life I got from Buffalo and will be replaced. Occasionally forgets to wake up in the morning. So do I. Died when my UPS died and may be related, so I'm not going to be too hard on Trend Net. Used many of their products and like the quality, price, and service.

Bottom Line: This is a basic NAS. Don't expect a lot of it other than storing files. It is DLNA compliant, but I don't use it that way.

1 out of 5 eggs Worked for about a month then just died

    Pros: Worked

Cons: Dead. Had initial issues where unit would not retain IP address. Maybe I wasnt doing something correct. Finally got it to stick, worked and then about 2 weeks later unit stopped working and so far just a nice paperweight. Have opened up ticket with Trendnet. Item failed right after 30 day newegg period, so no replacement.

1 out of 5 eggs Issues

Pros: This unit offers a great product at a great price.

Cons: I went through the wizard that was included on the installation disc. I couldn't map the drive at all so I found that there was a firmware update on the support site. Bad idea. It completely locked me out of the drive once it was done. I am now waiting on the "Tech Support Supervisor" from TrendNet to call me. I did get FTP to work for a little bit but I couldn't navigate to the drive using UNC at all, even after setting up a user on the management interface.

3 out of 5 eggs File system flaw/anomaly

Pros: Early experience with the product indicates that overall it seems to work well, build quality appears to be ok, install (HW and drivers) went smoothly

Cons: Strange anomaly surfaced in that the device cannot/will not handle a file or folder with the name P2P (no extension, no additional characters in the name). Folders with that name would not transfer, files of name P2P cannot be created, and files cannot be renamed to P2P. It makes me wonder what other name combinations will surface that the file system can't handle.

Customer support has so far been unresponsive. I placed a call, left sn and problem details, contact info, and was told they'd call me back soon. So far no call, no email.

Bottom Line: Problem makes me wonder what other name combinations will surface that the file system can't handle.

    4 out of 5 eggs TRENDnet TN-200

Pros: Super easy to setup and configure. I am running Ubuntu / Linux and had no issues with setup or configuration.

Cons: My only real issue is that the unit cannot be scanned by the Avia android media app. I should be able cast the media on the NAS to my Chromecast but although Avia see's the device it says "cannot scan the source" Not sure what the issue is but Avia works well with any other DLNA device on my network. Only the TN-200 cannot be scanned.

Bottom Line: I realize this could be an issue with the Avia app. Seems it might be a setting or spec of the NAS as Avia works well with all my other networked devices.

    4 out of 5 eggs Trendnet TN-200

Pros: Very good price - was a steal after coupon. Easy to set up. Every computer (and device) on my network see the NAS. Runs very quietly. The software that comes with it is very straightforward and easy to use. DLNA compliant, iTunes server, Windows Backup, Time Machine compatible, the list goes on. A very simple, but effective NAS. Small size too.

Cons: Must use a PC to set it up. After that, my Macbook (and every other device on my network) could see it just fine. It doesn't come with all the bells and whistles that other brands may have (I had considered several Synology devices) like apps. However, I couldn't pass it up for the price, especially when I would spend at least twice that on something else.

Bottom Line: Don't pass it up at the current price!

4 out of 5 eggs Nice litte NAS

Pros: Small, Pretty Quiet, Supports both networking and a USB add-on volume, works well as DLNA paired with a WDTV Live, Bench marked out to about 50MB/Sec. Worked fined with 2 4TB drives formats at 7.2TB used ST4000DM000 seagate drives.

Cons: There is not a lot of documentation available on this device. Takes forever to format. The cloud sync is limited to Ama*on service only.

4 out of 5 eggs Things have fallen into place

Pros: I wanted to post an update to my previous bad review. After spending more time with the unit, I have it all sorted now as it should be. I tried using a static IP address and when i did that the unit was not visible on the net. Maybe I had a conflict somewhere. However, with DHCP enabled and a few reboots I believe its working as it should now.

Cons: I still took of an egg as this unit is not for the novice. If you have no network admin experience at all, this thing may be frustrating for you. The DLNA server for some reason takes about 10 hours to index, which I think is strange. I tried it a dozen times, and it takes forever. Also, I found out the hardway that my Samsung SmartTV does not support NAS devices, so I cant use it anyway.

Bottom Line: I would recommend the unit now that I have it sorted. It would be nice if you could create generic read only shares that didn't require ID and PW.
