Pros: Easy install Encryption Extra outlet Small Decent internet connection speeds
Cons: Not recommended for houses with bad electrical due to occasional cut-outs Slower file transfers then cat5 cable Extra outlet is kinda hard to plug things into
Bottom Line: The Amped Wireless PLA2 was obtained to eliminate a trip hazard in my house. I kept tripping over the network cable ran in the hall to my husband's PC in the bedroom. I kept nagging him to run the cable thru the celing to the room or I will make him wireless... he did NOT want wireless even though we got a powerful Amped Wireless router allready! LOL.
Anyways I got this because one time I almost killed myself tripping down the stairs and I had enough of the evil cable in the hallway!
Time to get to performance:
Connection quality/stability: My husband is the one that is using this most of the time since his PC is in a different room then the router is and that’s where my PC is. He does report a few times a day where the connection will cut out randomly. It could be due to the bad electrical in my house though. As far as throughput he can’t really tell the difference between the PLA2 and being connected with the cat5 cable so far as internet speeds go. However file transfers are slower than being connected over cat5 cable. I do not recommend using this for something that needs good uptime like a server unless you have really good electrical in your house. My house is old and the contractors in my area are not the best, so please keep this in mind.
Please note: I do not recommend having a device with a power brick (Like a laptop or a Motorola barcode scanner charging cradle) connected to the same outlet. I had a power brick on the charging cradle for my Motorola barcode scanner and it would drop out 2-4 times a day for about a minute each time. I unplugged it and that problem went away. Now, the documentation does indicate the following: Plugging the Powerline adapter on the same power outlet as a smartphone/tablet charger will degrade performance. So please keep this in mind when using the PLA2.
Streaming performance: Not much different then over the cat5 cable... No buffering on VLC media player streaming a 1080p blue rip of a 3d movie! Yey no buffering!
Gaming performance: All the online games he tried worked like over the cat5 cable... Minecraft was smooth and not so laggy. Sometimes it would disconnect with the above power brick mentioned connected, however without it it was good to go!
