1 out of 5 eggs Final Review

    Pros: None

Cons: This camera cannot function as a surveillance device because of flaws in the current firmware. Only the newest cameras, of which I purchased two, have this firmware. The old firmware on the four cameras I have used for a year is fine.

Bottom Line: Have attempted to contact mfr customer care for a week using email, phone and online form. All have been met with an automated response, but there has been no attempt by mfr to return contact. Further, the response posted by mfr in response to my previous review regarding firmware problem lists a disconnected phone number. The phone number on the mfr web site leads only to an automated voicemail system. I'm afraid we're getting nowhere with resolving the problem. I must recommend that anyone seriously considering cameras from this mfr to reconsider. The newest firmware has flaws which will not allow the camera to function as an alerting device. The camera is useful only as a minimally functioning live monitoring device.

2 out of 5 eggs New Firmware Warning

Pros: Same good hardware quality as previously purchased.

Cons: New firmware has serious problems.

Bottom Line: THIS IS AN UPDATE TO MY PREVIOUS REVIEW
I have 8 cameras from this manufacturer. Six of the cameras are this model. They have all performed flawlessly over the past year. So I ordered two more of this type to fill out my system.
What to my surprise - updated firmware. Lots of menu items are moved around. Not much in the way of new selections. Took a while to get used to the new locations for configurable. No big deal there. Here's the problem. This new firmware (V5.1.2 build 140811) has a big problem. Security triggers (like email warnings and FTP) will not function unless there is a device connected to the Server and RSTP ports. It took a while to figure this out. What it means is that unless you hook these new cameras to a dedicated server or DVR, you can't get alerts from the camera. The camera simply ignores you email and FTP configuration and sends no alerts. Finally, after trying all sorts of things, I connected by iPhone to the camera using the SkyView Cam app and BINGO all the alerts started flowing out. Disconnect the app and the alerts shut down.
Bottom line is that the camera can't operate on its own. The earlier version of firmware did not have this problem. Needless to say, I'll try to get LaView tech support to acknowledge the issue, but they don't even have firmware posted for download. There is, BTW, a firmware upload function built into the camera....just no firmware published. I'd upload the older (but good) firmware if I could.
In the meantime, just be cautious with these cameras. They are fine hardware, but the new firmware can cause you fits.

4 out of 5 eggs Mostly good camera

Pros: The single IR LED, combined with a more sensitive Wide Dynamic Range setting gives a nighttime view that is excellent. Looks like there is a floodlight lighting up the yard out to at least 50 feet. I was wary of the single IR on this unit as compared to the ring of IR LEDs that most other cameras have. Very pleasantly surprised at the excellent result. Highly configurable...especially the networking ports. Appear to be very well weatherproofed. The camera is in a round housing that can be rotated around inside the mounting stand. You can point is almost anywhere once it's mounted. Mfr should have allowed more clearance for the cable inside the housing as it can bind a little in certain positions.

Cons: The cameras seem to have a weak networking signal. I initially had one cam on a 100 foot length of CAT5E connected using the T468A standard. That gave flaky network connectivity to the POE switch. I chopped off the RJ45 connectors and used the T468B standard and it became stable. Never had a peculiar situation like that before for another device. As mentioned on another of my reviews, the cameras don't like to talk with any the NAS devices I have, so I just use the FTP upload feature. Not as elegant, but at least it works.

Bottom Line: I have 3 outdoor cameras from this mfr. They all work very nicely. I like the iPhone app especially. Very clear images. The housings are warm when the cameras are operating, but it doesn't seem to be a problem. The warm housings must be standard for these units. Remember, these are POE cameras and require a POE switch or injector. Otherwise you would need to hook up a separate power cable. I plan to add more cams from this mfr in the future. Have 5 more available POE ports on my switch.
