Millions of laptops are sold every year, and millions are discarded, creating a number of environmental issues surrounding the materials used to manufacture the machines and the e-waste involved in getting rid of them.

Several companies have come up with some solutions to various environmental issues, and there’s a certification process aimed at identifying those companies and their respective laptops.

Known as TCO Certified, the program establishes criteria for a specific level of sustainability through a technology product’s life cycle, with independent verification pre- and post-certification. A total of 11 product categories are covered by the TCO Certified program:

  • Displays
  • Laptops
  • Tablets
  • Smartphones
  • Desktops
  • All-in-one PCs
  • Projectors
  • Headsets
  • Network equipment
  • Data storage products
  • Servers

If a product is TCO Certified, then its market materials can carry the TCO Certified logo and it’s listed in a database of certified products. For example, you can find a list of TCO Certified laptops here. In total, over 3,500 products produced by 27 brands are TCO Certified.

In order to be TCO Certified, a product needs to meet a wide range of social and environmental sustainability criteria. These include methods of material sourcing and manufacturing, use and reuse, and recovery and recycling that contribute to a waste-free product lifecycle that ensures a circular economy based on durable, repairable, upgradable, and recyclable products.

Just a few of the specific criteria include responsible mineral sourcing, reduce worker exposure to hazardous wastes, ergonomic design, product energy efficiency (Energy Start or equivalent), and a host of other factors that contribute to the circular economy mentioned above. You can find a complete list of criteria here.

Because the number of TCO Certified products is so vast, we’ve selected seven of the best certified laptops to make your sustainable shopping easier. The following are some of the best business-class laptops you can buy, in a variety of form factors from clamshell laptops to convertible 2-in-1s to detachable tablets.

We have thousands of Laptops you can choose from.

I’m a little confused… is TCO Certified a thing that came and went? I hadn’t heard of the specific moniker before (can’t even find what TCO stands for anywhere!), but by the description, it seem like something I’d support. However, a search for “TCO Certified” on your website (, that is) produces 15 results of things that are not computers. How do we shop for these?

What's your take?
