Thermal Grizzly's Kapton Insulation Sheet Black Edition is an electrically insulating adhesive film for masking the components around a CPU or GPU die before an electrically conductive thermal interface material (TIM) goes on. It is the thinner, stronger version of the standard yellow sheet.
The film can be used at high temperatures and serves as an installation aid for TIM materials that conduct electricity, such as Conductonaut liquid metal, Carbonaut, or KryoSheet. When using these materials it is ideal for precise masking of parts such as SMDs. The data sheet gives the RAM components on a graphics card as another example.
Compared to the standard sheet, this one is slightly thinner (30 µm instead of 40 µm) and offers a significantly higher breakdown voltage. Its short-term temperature limit is a little lower, 260 °C against 280 °C.
The scope of delivery is 10 carrier sheets, and the film is supplied on them with each sheet containing 5 Kapton strips. Each strip measures 10 mm in width and 60 mm in length. Clean the adhesive surface beforehand! It is recommended to clean the contact surfaces thoroughly before applying a strip, e.g., using isopropyl alcohol.
Thermal Grizzly says the strips should not be combined with a High Performance Heatspreader (HPHS) or a Direct-Die cooler, because both rest directly on the CPU package. Their internal structure may end up sitting on the film, which prevents contact between the CPU die and the HPHS or cooler. To protect the electronic components in those builds, apply a thin layer of TG Shield instead.
