The TCA9548A I2C multiplexer expansion module is designed to expand a single I2C bus into 8 independent I2C channels, making it an ideal solution for connecting multiple I2C devices with the same address. Each channel is controlled through the I2C bus, allowing the system controller to select any individual SCn/SDn channel or a combination of channels according to the programmable control register. The default I2C address is 0x70, and it can be configured within the range of 0x70 to 0x77. In theory, up to 8 TCA9548A multiplexers can be used on the same I2C bus, and each multiplexer can connect up to 8 devices with the same address, allowing up to 64 same-address I2C devices to operate on a single I2C port.
