Thermal Grizzly's Delid-Die-Mate for Intel 13th and 14th Gen is a delidding tool for Intel Core processors on socket LGA1700. It takes the heat spreader off so the CPUs can be cooled via "direct die", for example. For the newer socket there is the LGA1851 version, and for AMD the Ryzen 7000 version.
Delidding is the process of removing the processor's heat spreader (IHS). On unsoldered processors it is typically a way to replace the thermal interface material (TIM) between the CPU die and the heat spreader. High-quality thermal compound or liquid metal goes in before the heat spreader is reinstalled. However, since the 13th generation Intel Core processors are soldered, this is not an option: taking out the indium solder would create too large a gap between the IHS and the CPU dies. Therefore the 13th/14th Gen Intel Core CPUs are primarily delidded for the so-called "direct die" method, where the CPU cooler is mounted directly on the processor chip. With the heat spreader no longer part of the cooling circuit, a significantly optimized heat transfer from the die to the CPU cooler is possible. A cooler made for this is the Intel 1700 Mycro Direct-Die Pro water block.
According to Thermal Grizzly, experience shows that by omitting the heat spreader and mounting the cooler on the dies, temperatures can be reduced by 10-15 °C. That applies if liquid metal such as Conductonaut is used as TIM. A corresponding test with an Intel Core i9-13900K was carried out by Roman "der8auer" Hartung, content creator, Tech-YouTuber, professional overclocker and engineer, who cooperated with Thermal Grizzly on this tool.
