    Nice enclosure

For those who like to DIY, this rack provides a good way to give you fast drive swapping without having to take the case apart. Despite the apparent cramped design, it does a good job of keeping drives cool (40C in a 27C environment, even under ... Read more

    1 out of 5 eggs iStarUSA BPU-340SATA-BPL 3x5.25" to 4x3.5" SAS/SATA 6.0 Gb/s Hot-Swap Cage - OEM

Pros: I am so disappointed with this item. Once I attached it to the server I sow a spark on the back of the fan --> yes it did burn my motherboard :( now it will cost me more to buy new motherboard. I sent a message to newegg they sent me RMA # only nothing else, to me it's a defect item and I am not going to bay for return.

    Cons: Nothing

5 out of 5 eggs Great little item

Pros: Solid with aluminum trays for heat dissipation. Individual power buttons for each carrier (!)

Cons: Fan is slightly noisy but then my case is on the desk, near my ears. Also, I think they used a high RPM, high volume fan instead of one for high static pressure, which is what is needed.

Bottom Line: My secondary PC is a Corsair monster with 12 drives in it, 4 being hot swap. I placed this cage into a smaller Corsair case that is my primary and love the fact that the hot plug drives have individual power buttons so they can be shut off when not needed, Perfect for backups and storage.

3 out of 5 eggs Disapointed

Pros: : 4 x 3.5” HDD cage that fits in 2 x 5.25” bays. Built in Fan. Improved connection layout. Aluminum trays. Aluminum frame.

    Cons: Technical support is nonexistent.

These units come with a fan switch, ‘High – Auto’, and a temperature alarm buzzer which sounds randomly and always just before the fan kicks into ‘High’.

The fan switch only works on ‘Auto’.

You are supposed to be able to disabled the buzzer by holding down the ‘Reset’ button for 6 seconds, wait for 2 beeps and then the buzzer should be disabled. It doesn’t work. I held the button down for 2 full minutes with no result

Before I return this unit to Newegg I wanted to give iStar a chance to address these issues by opening up a support ticket and detailing the problems. That was 5 business days ago with no reply. There is no other contact information on their site so calling is not possible..

Bottom Line: I purchased this unit for a new build. I have 4 other iStar 3 bay cages that work great. I like the unit but the buzzer is truly annoying. I’m really disappointed in iStar for their lack of attention to my issues. I am now going through the tedious task of dismantling the RAID, removing the cage and packing it up to return to Newegg and start looking for a replacement from someone else.

3 out of 5 eggs Mixed bag--could be good for you, though!

Pros: It's a decent product. I own three of these now--two of them came combined with an iStarUSA case, and a third I purchased separately on this product page. It keeps my drives very cool and it lets me swap out hard drives in case of a RAID drive failure. Plus, it's cheap compared to similar products!

Cons: One of the three units I have had a faulty overheating alarm--it would go off all the time, even when there weren't any drives inside! Luckily, I'm getting a replacement for that one.

As other reviewers have noted, switching off a drive causes other drives to lose power briefly. So, don't screw around with the on/off switches for the drives unless your computer is off. (Of course, you can still use this for hot swapping if your motherboard supports it, but you have to just leave the bay power ON while doing this.)

    Fan is very noisy.

Bottom Line: Even though I experienced a lot of cons with this item, the device is a very good fit for me, because these are being placed inside servers that will be a server rack--so noise isn't an issue, and we won't be randomly turning drives on and off. Your mileage may vary, however!

4 out of 5 eggs Works

Pros: Works well in hot-swap once you convince Windows to use the AHCI drivers instead of standard sata.

Cons: One issue which is easily remedied... power button on one drive triggers others to drop as well. Simple fix is to just eject drive in windows and pull it without pressing the button. Then when you put it back in, just slide the drive in and lock. Drive spins up and windows recognizes the drive.

5 out of 5 eggs Super Item

Pros: Easy to install and implement. Fits right into (3) 5.25" slots. The HDs fit well and are easy to install and remove. I did not test hot-swap capabilities, but it runs reasonably quiet and seems to keep the HDs cool. I used this for a RAID 5 on a promise FastTrack 4650 controller (also bought here) and it controller had no issues with this setup. You do have to power the unit on the first time you power up the machine, then it will come on every time after that by itself.

Cons: None that I can find so far.

Bottom Line: It just works and it a great buy for the money.

2 out of 5 eggs Keeps drives cool, but not hot-swap

Pros: - Keeps drives cool. Disks that were burning hot when mounted in the case, now are barely warm.

Cons: - Switching off one of the drives causes brief shutdown of a drive in an adjacent bay!
    - Noisy fan, almost impossible to replace with a quieter one.
    - Tray locks difficult to operate.

Bottom Line: I bought this cage to improve cooling of the disks in my computer, and it does a terrific job. Drives, that were burning hot when mounted in the disk bays in the computer case, now are barely warm. This comes at an expense: the fan, even if set at the lowest setting is the biggest noicemaker in my computer. I wanted to replace it with a quieter one, but it is so tightly integrated with the enclosure, that I just decided that it wasn't worth the effort.
The reason that I gave the cage only two eggs is the fact, that an attempt to remove off one of the drives, causes a brief shutdown of the adjacent drive. I have the drives configured as 3+1 (3 disks in RAID5 + one independent). Every time I switch off the independent drive in order to remove it, one of the RAID drives shuts down for a fraction of a second and trips array rebuild. I didn't dare to repeat the experiment on one of the drives from the array.

If you want to keep the disks cool - buy. If you care about hot-swap - forget

5 out of 5 eggs Good SATA hot-swap cage

Pros: Good, solid hot-swap bay. Keeps my drives cool enough. Serves its purpose well.

Cons: Lock design is not the best. Also, the power buttons don't line up directly to the bay they power.

Bottom Line: Love this cage. I've had one in my media server for about 2 years, and just bought a second one to add more drives to it.

Yes, this does have a fairly loud fan. You don't get a 4-drive hot-swap cage for your bedroom computer. You get it because you have 4 hard drives, and hard drives need to be kept cool. Quiet fans are quiet because they spin slowly and don't move much air. Cages like this pack drives close together, so they need to have a fan that's capable of keeping the drives from dying. There's a reason people don't sleep in data centers.

    5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I've ordered a couple of these type of hot swap cages, this one is the best one I've ordered. The fan keeps the hard drives nice and cool. You can "lock" the hard drives so you can't accidentally open the tray. You can use either SATA power or molex power. LEDs are bright for easy viewing.

Cons: No cons really, see other thoughts.

Bottom Line: Although the trays can be locked, if they're unlocked they're easy to accidentally "eject" if you press on the right spot but it hasn't happened to me because I keep the trays in the "lock" position.
